Turtle
Turtle
Rating: Extreme
Turtle Mountain has long been a favorite for the more advanced rider. This is big open country with high avalanche risk. Please be aware of conditions and plan your trip accordingly. There are two logging road access points off the Kirkcup trail at 9 km and 11 km. The forest service roads are ungroomed and see a lot of single-track traffic. They become whooped out (bumpy) very quickly. After kilometers of arm burning intensity and sweat dripping down your face, your next obstacle is technical tree riding before reaching the Alpine and having to cross the gulch. The gulch will make everyone pucker.
Both front and back trail access to Turtle is a tenured Heli-ski area and requires riders to cross some of the ski runs. Please stay on the marked trail until you reach the alpine. It is important to respect the ski runs in order to foster a good working relationship with the local Heli businesses.
Be aware of high avalanche hazards on the expert terrain. It is your responsibility to check avalanche conditions before heading out.
