Did you know, the Frisby Ridge Cabin wasn’t always part of the Revelstoke Snowmobile Club?
Originally, the cabin was used by the local cross country ski club who held the special use permit for Frisby Ridge. When the ski club chose not to renew its permit, the Revelstoke Snowmobile Club Board of Directors saw an opportunity and applied to take over the permit to help with the increased popularity of sledding in Revelstoke.
However, gaining access to the permit didn’t come easily for the Club. It involved a lot of negotiation with the Ministry of Environment that revolved around protecting local mountain caribou, which is a whole different story. If you don’t know about it yet, you can read about it here.
As you can see in the picture below, when the Club successfully took over the permit, the cabin needed some work. The cabin could only hold 12 people, and the structure itself was held together by a cable that ran through eyelets fastened to the inside walls, which was then tightened to hold it all together.
An easy decision was made to replace the old cabin with a new, more capable design, one that was elevated and engineered for the extreme snow loads common to Revelstoke.
Without having easy access to the site, the structure was prefabbed by locals in Revelstoke and delivered to its current location via airlift from a large logging industry helicopter, all coordinated by the Club.
The site was prepped by club members and volunteers, and the structure was delivered in two parts, first the floor and walls, then the roof. The cabin was wired and insulated by Bobby Hughes, Club Director, giving it electricity and comfort. The deck was later added by Revelstoke contractor Roy Jones and his son, making the cabin, or Feldinger Hut, one of the best hangout spots in the world.
You might be wondering where the name Feldinger Hut came from? That’s thanks to one of the Revelstoke Snowmobile Club’s founders, Mike Feldinger, who was instrumental in establishing the trails on Frisby Ridge.
