Here is our current update for trail conditions on Boulder, Frisby and for parking at the 3km pit.
Frisby Trail Conditions
Frisby continues to hold snow from the booth onwards. We’re expecting this to continue to hold up with more snow added today.
West Boulder Trail Conditions
West Trail has been marginal over the past week, and we’ve already seen a noticeable drop in rider numbers. We managed to groom all the way to the booth on March 11th and are planning to do the same tonight (March 12th). Expect changing conditions over the coming days.
Boulder Main Trail Conditions
As most of you know, we have continued parking at the lower lot on Boulder. Prior to last night’s storm (March 11th-12th), riders had 1.2 km of gravel riding before reaching snow again just past the powerlines. Last night, we pushed more snow from the 2.7k pit onto the trail and we have a couple of inches of coverage to the big switchback. It is thin up to the first switchback.
Why We Haven’t Plowed to 3 km Yet
There are a few reasons for this:
- The 3 km pit does not have enough space to accommodate the number of riders we’ve been seeing over the last two weeks and for what we’re expecting through the weekend.
- We do not have permission to park in the lower pit (2.7km), and Rec Sites & Trails BC / the Ministry of Forests does not allow parking on the running road surface, further limiting our parking space.
- Because of these restrictions, we would likely have to turn riders away due to capacity issues if we opened parking at 3 km right now.
We’ve also been watching the forecast closely and were expecting significant snowfall and boy did it deliver. With the new snows (~20cm) — and the time and money we’ve already invested in maintaining the lower trail with trucked snow dumps and deliveries — it hasn’t made sense to plow the road.
Our Plan
Depending on trail conditions, our current plan is to plow the road up to the 3 km pit on Sunday at 7pm. Be advised, if you are riding Boulder on Sunday, you’ll need to be back down before 7pm or you’ll be riding 3km of gravel.
We will begin parking at the upper lot on Monday.
Please make sure to obey parking staff instructions and stop at the booth to pay for your daily trail pass or scan your membership.
Driving:
Please follow all general FSR driving best practices available here:
- Road Use Regulations – Let’s Ride B.C.
- Resource road radio communications
- Sharing the Road – Revelstoke Snowmobile Club
Radios
We are recommending everyone bring radios during this time as there are a number of tight spots and blind corners. Please use Resource Road Channel RR18.
Drying-out period
There is also a possibility that the road may require a drying-out period after plowing. If that happens, we may need to close access sometime during the week.
This decision is entirely ours to make so we’ll try to keep this closure as short as possible, but allowing the road to dry could prevent a much longer shutdown if Forestry were to step in.
Thank you!
For being patient with us through this period, getting the timing right has been difficult with the weather this season. It is our first year overseeing the road and parking with our RMA and we’re doing our best to make the right decision for all.
